Wintergarden is a series of engravings on the glass monitors of old televisions and computers. When this technology got old people started to dump these gadgets to all kind of places they don’t belong. I have used a lot of recycled materials for art, but old tv’s felt impossibly ugly and difficult to be usefull for anything. I found the solution by understanding that one can engrave on the glass surface of the monitors and there are ice flowers. Ice flowers are the beautiful ornaments winter produces on cold windows out of humidity. So became the idea of the Wintergarden, where cold flowers have taken over silent computers and tv sets. These are melancholic works.
First version of the Wintergarden was a big installation in 2017 at Mänttä art festival. After that I wanted to try out the monitors as separate pieces. I engraved actual ice flowers and many other cold and warm things; like the portrait of my youngest son and the gravestone of my father. And a self-portrait to be somewhere there in between. These works were exhibited 2020 at Galleria Huuto together with drawings by Sampsa Indrén.
