Excerpts from the original production plan for the “Critical Mass” urban enviromental art exhibition in St. Petersburg 2011:
”Dinosaur Egg (Impossible is Possible)
Location:
On an emty statue base in front of Culture Center Troiskii, near the Proletarskaya metro station in St. Petersburg.
The concept:
The Dinosaur Egg is a egg-shaped sculpture (height 3 meters, radius 2,3 meters) which surface is covered with recycled hubcaps of cars.
The title of the work and its material, the hubcaps, are a reference to cars and fossil fuels. The increasing automobilisation of the exploding amount of people living on earth is a serious enviromental problem. On a global level the fuel the cars use is eccelerating the climate change. On a smaller every-day level the amount of cars is lowering the quality of life of the people living in the growing cities around the world.
The title and the shape of the work refers also to dinosaurs; the romantic beasts wich ruled the earth once, before they disappeared totally, propably because of a climate change caused by a meteor. Now in the form of fossill fuel they feed the modern beasts dominating mammals on earth.
The sculpture location on a emty statue base is a comment on Russias contemporary problems. The location has strong soviet flavour on it; the culture center used to be a culture house and on the nowadays empty statue base there used to stand a statue of Lenin.
Many enviromental problems in modern St Petersburg can be seen as a legacy of the Soviet Union; corruption, hidden decision making ignorant to the well-being of both ordinary citizens and the enviroment and the lack of citizens society. The unstable history tempts people, both the decision makers and the voters, to make fast profits and dive into consumer life-style with its status symbols, instead of being politically responsible.
The Dinosaur Egg on the empty statue base of Leninin can be interpreted in a different ways. The scary big sculpture can be seen as crushing the old ideals of equality and community or the dinosaurs egg can be seen as the modern situation being a fruit of past times.”
